Below is a list of frequently asked questions:
1) Where do I get numbers for my barcode?
- There are currently 3 available sources for barcode numbers, and as explained below, only two of these are recognised:
i) Barcode number reseller websites
2) Which type of barcode should I use?
Despite the temptation of lower costs - buyers need to be a aware that 'recycled' barcode numbers provide no guarantee of being accepted by all New Zealand retailers. You will recognise these numbers as they do not start with the numbers "94".
The numbers being sold are not official GS1 numbers and are not able to be verified as unique... despite what you may be told.
DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON NON GS1 COMPLIANT BARCODES - THEY MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED BY YOUR RETAILER!
ii) GS1 allocated barcodes
Internationally, GS1 are a non-profit organisation that allocate bar code numbers for each country. These are official GS1 numbers and are guaranteed to be unique throughout the world. This is the official barcode number source. They are located in Wellington and Auckland.
iii) National Library of NZ
For books, magazines and periodicals we can make EAN 13 digit barcodes from your assigned isbn/issn numbers. If you do not have assigned numbers please contact the National Library.
- There are many types of barcodes ranging from shipper
to ISBN barcodes. Below are a few examples of the standard barcodes used. The barcode type will depend on which product it is
being used for.
